The Corrections Log

Nothing published here is quietly rewritten. When a figure on a file turns out to be wrong, the change is made, dated, described and left on the page for as long as the page exists. This site reports on how other organisations handle complaints, which makes its own handling of complaints a matter of record.

Three classes of change

A correction is issued where a published fact was wrong: a wrong count, a wrong median, a wrong date, a misattributed statement. The original wording is quoted in the note so a reader can see what changed.

A clarification is issued where the fact was right but the wording allowed a reasonable reader to draw a wrong conclusion. The most common trigger is the regulator actions field, where a zero has occasionally been read as an absence of data rather than a clean record.

A withdrawal is issued where a claim cannot be supported at all. The claim comes down, the page stays up, and the note explains what was removed and why. Pages are not deleted to make a problem disappear.

The last twelve months

Between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026 the log carried 23 entries: 14 corrections, 7 clarifications and 2 withdrawals.

Nine of the 14 corrections were figure errors on a file, four were date errors, and one was a misattributed operator statement. Both withdrawals concerned claims sourced to a single reader submission that could not be corroborated on a second source.

The median time from receipt of a correction request to a published change was 2 days. The longest was 9 days, on a request that required a regulator's published notice to be re-checked against its original date.

How to file a request

Write to [email protected] with the page address, the sentence or figure at issue, and what you say the correct position is. Documents help; assertions on their own rarely move a figure.

Every request is acknowledged within 72 hours by a person, not an autoresponder. Requests from operators are handled on the same timetable as requests from readers, with no priority given to either.

If a request is declined, the reason is sent in writing. Declined requests from operators are counted in the annual total published on this page, so the ratio is visible.

What we will not do

We do not edit a published figure without a dated note. We do not remove a file because an operator objects to it. We do not accept a correction as a condition of a commercial arrangement, and any such offer would be published.

The corrections desk is answerable to the editor named at /masthead/. The standards these corrections are measured against, including the funding disclosure, are at /standards/.
